How to get rid of stress and anxiety? Then go exercise!

05/31/2022

Due to the impact of the epidemic in these years, many people have felt great stress and anxiety because of it. However, for those who like to exercise, the source of stress is something that can be “get rid of” or “transcended”. That said, exercise helps many of us stay awake during uncertain times. But why does it keep us awake, and do different types of exercise have benefits over others? Or does any old form of exercise help?

Let’s talk about stress!

More specifically, oxidative stress. The culprit in many of the problems we seem to be dealing with. The more scientific background to oxidative stress is that it basically occurs when there is interference between two things: the production of free radicals and antioxidants. This basically means that your body can’t really perform at its best and reduces its ability to detoxify itself. Because it cannot detoxify itself, it can cause damage. This means damage to areas such as proteins, lipids and even our own DNA.

There are a few theories about what oxidative stress can do to humans, and the list is relatively endless. For example, in simpler oxidative stress changes. Issues such as chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, depression, and ADHD can occur. In more extreme cases, a person can end up developing Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, various cancers, and even heart failure.

Types of Stress Relief Exercises

The coolest thing about exercising to relieve stress is that there is no set workout routine. This means that things like walking, running or cycling are just as effective as going to the gym and lifting weights.

The thing about it is that you need to choose a sport that works for you. For example, if you’re just starting out, maybe you’ll walk around the neighborhood for 10 minutes. If you need some low impact because of previous knee or ankle issues, cycling can be a treat. Or, if you’re already an avid cardio enthusiast, you might want to go for a run. In any case, starting somewhere is better than doing nothing.

The science behind the theory

For the most part, we are faced with the argument that physical activity is good for our health and keeps us healthy. But what about our mental health? Well, according to reports, exercising regularly is actually a way to reduce the stress we experience.

In a study of more than 185 students from German universities, 36.6% initially said they had depressive symptoms, with 41.8% adding that they had high levels of anxiety. Participants reported that their overall stress-related symptoms improved during the introduction of aerobic exercise. So much so that the original hypothesis of the study was supported by the results.

Why Are We Happy After Exercise?

When we start exercising, whether it’s daily, every other day, or 3 times a week. Our bodies do some remarkable things. It releases certain chemicals that make you feel good. It does this while suppressing hormones normally associated with stress and anxiety. The three chemicals released include endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. But what are these different chemicals? How do they affect us?

dopamine

Let’s start with dopamine. This is the feel-good neurotransmitter. It is mainly used as a messenger between nerve cells. Our dopamine plays a vital role in how we feel pleasure. It’s often responsible for helping us focus on things we like or find interesting. So an increase in this particular chemical messenger can make us feel good about ourselves.

Serotonin

Serotonin, another chemical produced by our nerves, is another messenger. It is usually found in our digestive system. However, it can also be found in our blood and central nervous system. But why does its boost make stress reduction so important? Because that’s actually what it does. It affects everything from your mood on a given day to the quality of your sleep. It helps reduce problems like depression and anxiety, and can even stimulate wound healing.

endorphins

Now, the other two are messenger-type chemicals that do two different things. One is happiness, and the other releases hormones that create a good sense of self. Endorphins are often associated with acting as the body’s natural pain relievers. They are released by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. However, they are not always released. In most cases, they are released in revenge for pain or stress. However, they are also responsible for creating a sense of well-being when you exercise.
